Chris Oomen (Diplom speech therapist 1991)

I qualified in 1991 and work as a speech therapist in Germany and the Netherlands, since 1999 state recognized in Germany.  I studied at the Hogeschool Eindhoven (NL) between 1987 - 1991. Paralell to my guidance as a speech therapist, I was working as a allround communication trainer for companies like Philips, ABN-Amro, Xerox and investigate several retail studies in sales customer relation managment. I did a Survey at Philips I & E Sales onto conflict management styles. From both, commercial and therapist experiences I developed my own therapie concept.

Anna Gernhold (B.Sc. NL 2016)

After my National Vocational Qualification I worked during a year as a volontier on Hippotherapy after the concept of Bethel,  Bodelschwinghsche Stiftungen Bethel in Bielefeld. In this context, she did an internship at the Mamre Patmos School, a special education of the v. Bodelschwinghschen Foundations Bethel, with the main focus on "mental" and "physical and motor development". Following to the FSJ, I studied speech therapy at the Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen (HAN) in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. I  graduated in July 2016 with a Bachelor of Science. During my studies, I already worked in several different internships in two different speech therapy practices with different treatment focuses in Cologne. Since 01.09.2016 I am  a state-recognized speech therapist in the logopedic practice Chris Oomen in Cologne.

Stutter Therapy

Fluency in our daily speech is very important for common efficient communications.

On average 800.000 people in Germany have problems to speak fluent. This number contains 130.000 children and adolensces. For children to speak non-fluent is a natural fase between 2 en 4 years. Reactions from peers and care talking persons like parents, family and kindergartennannies can initiate stutter awareness and condional patterns.

For grown up teens can stuttering means a stressfull moment in daily live, which can lead in worst case to avoiding communication or mobbing in school. Often therapy is to be followed, sometimes over years. When these speech problems do not ameliorate in daily live, secundary stuttering, for instance evading eye contact and development of tics can play a leading role.

Targets in the therapy

achieving tools and experiences which helps to gain fluency and to devellop more basic trust in speaking without anxiety.

Methods: we use different techniques which have to build up a natural speech and who will reinforce our self confidence managing daily speech challanges.

We in our team for example practice "de Doetichemse Methode" n. Theo Schoenaker, Ch. von Riper (Midvas). E-Bloodstein, Fernau-Horn and Cooper & Cooper. Keytarget: to create a tailored plan which amplifies creativity and motivation toward practice, exercising and home. Link: concept and goals in the stuttery treatment.

Quentions: How effective is your stutter therapy? Therapy is a competitive proces between therapist, patient en our daily environment, f.e. school, work, sport clubs. The success depends from different elements of speech and communication. Grafik onto therapy success in Germany, with the Bonner Stutter Method.

Voice Therapy

Our voice is a sensitive and precise instrument. It is used by our family, friends and colleges  for communication and singing, to articulate daily wishes, information and thoughts. Voice and sing training helps do develop the level of speech. Often forgotten, defined by nature: the primary function of our larynx and vocal folds is to project the lungs against aspiration.

In our evolution as human beings: intelligible speech developed in the last 100.000 years, relatively late compared to other human skills. Human speech into a babies life grows, compared with our human growing in a speed which can be seen as a rocket towards a bicycle, but also is being empowered by natural learning skills like shaping, learning by doing and trail and error.

In the first six years volume, pitch, pace, emotions, lautness are being shaped.

To posess a good, clear vocal tone means a lot to children, adolencess and adults. It means a certain free power to express yourself and finding your place in the world. Like being your own captain,  who controls his own ship, and set course into a crowded hafen or to decide to sail at the wide open sea. The voice principles are comparing with sailing: we have to cope with principals of the elements of nature, of the sea, human communication, our surroundings and the state of our own ship.

Voice problems can have several causes: physical, functional, neurological and psychological. These influences can disbalance our vocal system. Hoarseness, vocal fold or vocal fry problems can manifest. When after a short pause recovery not appears the work of a ENT-doctor and speech therapist commence in helping finding the cause and a cure to restore a good voice.

After a carefull examination of the ENT doctor the work of the speech therapist begins, after the receipy is printed. The speech therapist makes his/her own examination like an voice graphic, describing the voice, pitch, pace, speech, articulation and body tension. After the investigation, targets are being deduced and discussed, and we can start the therapy. Each session contains exercises, training of hearing skills, getting insight of the causes and practise  neu skills. A voice therapy contains mostly 10 or 20 sessions of 45 minutes and daily practice (10 minutes a day).

teaching and didactics

How to learn new ways of speech?

For a effective cooperation between the speech therapist and his patient/client is motivation, appreciation, investigation and assessment important.  To practice and stabilize the new behavior, for instance voice techniques, speech and language therapy, at home or at work, can be learned in our practice at the north of Cologne.

Target

The work in our practice is not a clinical situation. We investigate time and energy to assess your actual speech-, voice- or language situation. Methods: in a quick and -wenn necessary- deep scan, to develop a clear picture of your momentary performance. Targeting your wishes to ameliorate certain speech skills.

Key moments and key events

After the investigation excersises and training are to be followed, to create learning key moments and new experiences  (in vitro and in vivo). Background didactics are the MIDVAS method after the late Ch. von Riper, our knowlegde and evidence bases experience of speech, language and body language.

Cluttering

Cluttering is a speech problem which is not so familiar like stuttering or having voice problems.

It can be heard when certain syllables, words or parts of sentences are being swallowed or reduced, or poor articulated.

Cluttered speech leads to a low condition of intelligent speech and often lost of concentration for our hearing communication peers. Normally the rhythm of speaking is affected, (very) high pace of spoken words. They do interfere and cause a bad intelligible mixture. Patients with stammering symptoms do have problems with listening carefully in a dialog.

Compared with stuttering is stammering relativ unknown (statistics on average 5/1000 people). Due to this syndrom the self reflextion of a the own speech is not precise, people tend to overestimate their speech skills.

Treatment can offer good opportunities to produde a better communication and developing a better pragmatic performance.
